Having recently finished our letter-of-the-week school readiness program, I wanted to carry out activities incorporating the whole alphabet, to revise and continue to practice what the children had learned. We have a large box full of these magnetic alphabet magnets, and I decided to have the children sit in a circle where, one-by-one, they were given a word, and invited to hunt through the box of magnets to find the letter the word started with. They then placed their letter on the board, where the remainder of the word was written next to it.The children really enjoyed the "treasure hunt" aspect of this activity, as well as being able to place the magnets on the teacher's whiteboard. The children supported each other in recognising the beginning sound of each word, and cheered each other on as letters were discovered.
